Charles N. Martin, Jr.
Charlie Martin is the Chairman and Founder of Martin Ventures. Charlie joined Martin Ventures full-time in 2013 when Vanguard Health Systems, a hospital chain company he founded in 1997, was sold to Tenet Healthcare. Martin served as Vanguard’s Chairman and CEO for sixteen years. Under his leadership, the hospital chain grew to 28 hospitals with $6.5 billion in revenue. In 2013, Vanguard was acquired by Tenet Healthcare for $4.3 billion.
Prior to Vanguard, Charlie served as founder, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of OrNda HealthCorp. Under his leadership, OrNda grew from revenue of $450 million to $3 billion in four years and became the nation’s third largest investor-owned hospital management company. His career includes serving as President, Director and Chief Operating Officer of HealthTrust Inc., as well as, Executive Vice President and Director of Hospital Corporation of America, and Chief Operating Officer and Director of General Care Corp. He has also served on numerous Boards of Directors including University of Pennsylvania, Penn Law, RAND Corporation, and RAND Health, one of the largest independent health research groups in the world.

Phillip W. Roe
Chief Executive Officer
Phil Roe is the Chief Executive Officer of Martin Ventures. In this leadership capacity, Phil leads the investment committee and provides day-to-day oversight for all portfolio activity. Phil joined Martin Ventures in June 2015 after having served as Vice President of Finance for Tenet Healthcare for approximately 18 months post its acquisition of Vanguard Health System in October 2013.
Prior to his stint at Tenet, where his primary responsibility was for the Health Plans, Phil served in a number of leadership roles at Vanguard Health Systems since the company’s inception in 1997. Most recently, he served as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer a position he had held since 2007. Prior to that role, he served as its Chief Accounting Officer. Before joining Vanguard, Phil was the Controller and Chief Accounting Officer for OrNda Healthcorp. Phil started his career with Ernst & Young where he was a Senior Manager before joining OrNda.
Chief Operating Officer
Devin Carty serves as the Chief Operating Officer for Martin Ventures and is also a member of the investment committee. In this role, he helps identify new investments and assists current Martin portfolio investments in support of their strategic business goals and in furtherance of their vision.
Devin’s experience is extensive; having worked for great companies from NASA, PR Newswire and Gallup, to providers like Vanguard Health Systems and Cancer Treatment Centers of America. His extensive network of contacts will benefit Martin Ventures from both an investment opportunity standpoint and as a resource to introduce prospective clients to our portfolio.
He currently serves on the Boards of Clariture Health, of which is also a founder, Lucro Marketplace and the Beryl Institute. He is a founding Executive Council Member for Press Ganey’s Institute of Innovation.
Senior Vice President-Development
Rodney (“Rod”) Huebbers is Senior Vice President Development for Martin Ventures and leads its recently established consulting arm, Embolden Health Partners. Embolden Health Partners works with healthcare organizations to explore approaches in transforming their existing business to thrive in an uncertain healthcare climate.
Prior to joining Martin Ventures, Rod was the Chief Operating Officer of Medicine & Science at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) where he was responsible for developing and implementing the enterprise-wide strategic plan and direction of Medicine and Science, including the implementation of a system-wide clinical research organization with over 60 clinical trials, the development of a multi-site national physician practice model, and the development of a network affiliation model with major oncology centers across the country. Rod has over 30 years of senior level healthcare experience. He joined CTCA after serving as President and Chief Executive Officer of University Health System in Shreveport, Louisiana where he orchestrated the final transition/conversion of University Health System from a public entity under the aegis of Louisiana State University to a private, not-for-profit health system subsidiary of the Biomedical Research Foundation.
Prior to that role, Rod was President and Chief Operating Officer of Tenet Health System’s Detroit Medical Center, where he was responsible for the operation of nine hospitals with over 2,000 licensed beds, including Children’s Hospital of Michigan, the Rehab Institute of Michigan, and the Heart Hospital. Rodney also served as Chief Operating Officer of Vanguard Health System in San Antonio, Texas, overseeing the operation of Baptist Health System and service lines for cardiothoracic medicine, orthopedics, physical rehabilitation medicine, oncology, women’s and children’s health and behavioral health.
Chief Marketing Officer
Suzanne Towry is an accomplished marketing, public relations and communications specialist. In her current role, she supports the organization and its portfolio companies in all aspects of branding including logo development, positioning, communications, public relations, collateral and website development.
Most recently she was associated with Vanguard Health Systems where her responsibilities included marketing, branding, internal communications, public relations and crisis communications. In 2013, she led the successful re-positioning of the Vanguard Health Systems brand to more accurately address the progressiveness of the organization. This effort led to a complete overhaul of the logo and the development of the tagline “Health.Forward”. She was with Vanguard Health Systems since its inception in 1997 and joined Martin Ventures when it was subsequently acquired by Tenet Healthcare Corporation in late 2013. Suzanne has deep health care industry knowledge having spent her entire career in health care.
Chief Human Resources Officer
Julie Freeman oversees recruiting, hiring, and onboarding of new employees for the portfolio. She is also responsible for creating, coordinating and administrating benefit packages, benefit coordination, administration, and all provider negotiations. Additionally, she supervises payroll, time management system and is responsible for the human resources area of due diligence when evaluating potential investment opportunities.
Prior to joining Martin Ventures in 2009, Mrs. Freeman was Director of Culture at e+ CancerCare where she was tasked with definition and implementation of the company culture throughout the organization. Previously, she served as their Director of Human Resources and Recruiting. Before her time at e+ Cancer Care, Ms. Freeman was a Manager at Executive Travel and Parking for eleven years where she called on business accounts and coordinated travel for corporate and entertainment clients.
Chief Administrative Officer
Danelle Mitchell oversees the daily administrative operations of the company, including support and space needs for Martin Ventures team and acts as liaison for coordination of needs within the portfolio of companies. She also directly supports the Chairman.
Prior to joining Martin Ventures, Mrs. Mitchell provided support to the Chairman of Vanguard Health Systems while also performing dispatching and logistics for private corporate travel. She has 22+ years of extensive management and administration experience, to include program coordinator and recruiting in Trauma & SCC at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, multi-physician clinic management with Christus St. Michael Health System, and private practices in southern Arkansas.
Director Deal Analysis and Due Diligence
Michael Platek provides transaction due diligence and analysis for Martin Ventures. In this role, he provides support to the Martin Ventures management and investment teams on new and existing projects and investments.
Michael is a CPA and spent seven years with KPMG LLP serving as an audit manager, then transitioning as a Director in the firm’s National Healthcare Due Diligence team. Michael then joined Symbion Healthcare in 2008, and served as a member of the M&A group where he focused on ASC and surgical hospital transactions. In 2014, Michael co-founded NaviLife Health Solutions, a patient navigation Company which provided a mechanism for hospitals to secure referral volume and streamline the ED process. The concept successfully re-routed in-patient admissions, improved patient coordination of care and increased hospital volume by simplifying the patient transfer process. The Company was acquired by PHI Air Medical in 2015.
Adrienne Thompson is the VP of Finance for Martin Ventures. She is responsible for overseeing the accounting team, establishing and implementing accounting policies, cash management, preparing annual budgets, and assisting portfolio companies with processes and general accounting.
Prior to joining Martin Ventures, Mrs. Thompson worked in public accounting in Baton Rouge, LA. She also did financial consulting work for clients in the healthcare and retail industries.
Jordan Lipson works with the investment team and contributes to sourcing, analysis, structuring, due diligence and ongoing support of existing portfolio companies.
Prior to joining Martin Ventures, Mr. Lipson served as an Operations Analyst for United Surgical Partners International, where he focused on the development, strategy, and day-to-day operations of outpatient surgery centers. Prior to USPI, Mr. Lipson served as an Investment Banking Analyst at Nymex Capital.
Jeremy Martin serves as Senior Advisor to Martin Ventures. In this role, he assists with the development of forward thinking projects focused on delivering healthcare services in new ways with a specific emphasis on post-hospital and community-based care models.
In addition to his role at Martin Ventures, Jeremy is a Co-Founder and CEO of OnPointe Health, a family of companies that provide patient-centered healthcare services. These services are provided in a variety of settings including hospital-based skilled nursing units, transitional care SNFs, long-term care nursing facilities, assisted living facilities, and patients’ homes. Prior to OnPointe, he has held leadership positions in several other companies that deliver healthcare services across the post-acute and community-based care continuum.
Joe Moore serves on the investment committee and is responsible for the development and structuring of deals. He evaluates the investment potential of companies seeking funding in addition to consulting with members of the management team on financial analysis, deal structure, and documentation.
Prior to joining Martin Ventures, Mr. Moore was Executive Vice President at Vanguard Health Systems, where he was tasked with the areas of risk management, facilities development, and capital expenditures deployment. He previously served as Chief Financial Officer where he was responsible for all financial functions of the company. Prior to his 16 years with Vanguard, Mr. Moore spent 27 years in the healthcare industry at HCA serving in the areas of operations, acquisitions, development and capital deployment.
George I. Lazenby, IV
George Lazenby serves as Senior Advisor to Martin Ventures. He is responsible for evaluating investment opportunities and consulting with the investment committee. Mr. Lazenby has nearly 20 years of experience in the field of Healthcare Information Technology. Most recently he served as member of the Board of Directors and CEO of Emdeon, the nation’s largest health information network. Mr. Lazenby led Emdeon through significant growth and change making the company a clear leader in its space. Under his leadership Emdeon completed over 15 acquisitions, implemented cost transformation initiatives driving over $75 million in annual savings and was successful in acquiring leverage from both banks and the bond markets. In 2009, Mr. Lazenby led Emdeon through a successful IPO and in 2011 sold the company to Blackstone for $3 billion.
Prior to Emdeon, Mr. Lazenby served as COO of Medifax EDI, one of the nation’s leading revenue cycle management companies that was acquired in 2004 by WebMD. Mr. Lazenby has worked with a number of Private Equity firms including General Atlantic, Hellman and Friedman, Blackstone, and Crescent Capital. Mr. Lazenby co-founded OrderInsite, LLC., a leading provider of cloud based supply chain and inventory management software for the pharmacy industry, in March of 2014 and currently serves as CEO.
Mr. Lazenby also serves on the Board of Directors for NextGxDx, ProxsysRx and Compass Professional Health Services.
Danielle O’Rourke leads transaction execution for the firm and is responsible for originating, evaluating and executing investment opportunities. In addition, Danielle works with portfolio company management teams to execute financial and strategic initiatives, serving as a board member to Ovuline and Clockwise.MD.
Prior to joining Martin Ventures in 2014, Mrs. O’Rourke served as a Private Equity Associate for the Riverside Company Micro-Cap Fund where she focused on investment evaluation and due diligence. Prior to the Riverside Company, Mrs. O’Rourke served as a Senior Investment Banking Analyst at Brentwood Capital Advisors.
George Garrett is a Senior Advisor for Martin Ventures. His 32-year career in healthcare has focused on healthcare joint-ventures, and mergers and acquisitions of hospitals, hospital systems, and healthcare businesses that support hospitals.
George has worked for HCA, HealthTrust-The Hospital Company (a “spin-off” of HCA in 1987,) Columbia-HCA and Ardent Health Services, all based in Nashville, TN. He was responsible for identifying healthcare opportunities, developing valuation recommendations, coordinating due diligence among a team of functional experts, negotiating definitive agreements, and working with the legal, accounting, and financing sources on closing the transaction whether the transaction was a joint-venture, merger, or acquisition. George was the lead on transactions as small as partnering a surgery center with surgeons to as large as a $2.1 billion multi-hospital system in multiple states with a managed care plan in 2 states.
Prior to joining HCA in 1981, George worked for IBM as a Sales Representative for 4 years. He graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1977 with a BA in Business Administration and a minor in Political Science.
